Southeast Asia

In Southeast Asia, we focus on Myanmar, where we collaborate with civil society and pro-democratic actors to promote an inclusive political settlement and transitional justice processes.

The Challenges

The February 2021 coup significant changed the context in Myanmar. Civil society organizations and pro-democratic actors were severely impacted and many have had to adapt their operations. Several decades of civil war in Myanmar have left a legacy of pervasive sense of injustice.

The Opportunities

Despite the constrained space in Myanmar, civil society and pro-democratic actors are finding ways to continue working securely and advocating for respect of human rights and peace. They are convening dialogue platforms, addressing past and present injustices, and affirming the dignity of victims.

Our Work in Southeast Asia

  • We help our civil society partners adapt and continue their critical work advocating for the interests of their communities in defence of democracy.
  • We provide organisational development and advisory support to our partners so that they can continue to play their influential role domestically and internationally to promote democratic governance and responsible business.
  • We support organisations to adapt their operating models to work remotely and to maintain their donor support.
  • We support our partners to convene discussions amongst Myanmar civil society and inform international perspectives.
  • We work with a diverse range of groups to engage in dialogue and inform processes that will form the foundations of a new inclusive political settlement in Myanmar.
