In Central Asia, we work towards regional cooperation and strengthen domestic peacebuilding initiatives that promote social cohesion, good governance and conflict sensitive business practice.
Central Asia is a region with diverse cultures, languages and historical heritage, presenting unique opportunities and challenges for peacebuilding. The region’s diversity and strategic geographical location requires a nuanced approach to fostering social cohesion and regional cooperation. Enhancing inter-community dialogue, building trust between civil society and Governments, and addressing common environmental and social challenges are key peacebuilding priorities.
We focus on peacebuilding challenges that are present in three countries – Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. In the Kyrgyz Republic, the Foundation has, since 2013 provided support to state structures as well as civil society and business. Our support strengthens their individual and collective ability to understand risks, develop policies and implement actions that strengthen social cohesion.
In 2018 we expanded our work to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. In Uzbekistan, we have supported government and research institutes working to promote regional connectivity and the development of civil society. In Kazakhstan, we have supported multi-stakeholder research and dialogue to address tensions related to oil company operations. You can find information on our current and former partnerships here.
Our objectives
From 2024-2026 we will work towards two objectives. The first is to strengthen social cohesion and address the growing social polarization in the community. The second objective is to promote regional cooperation to address environmental and social challenges, especially in border regions. We will continue to support partners working at the country level and intensify our efforts to develop regional cooperation in response to peacebuilding challenges.
We work in: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan
